Donna Huanca at Goodman Gallery, Johannesburg

Peres Projects is pleased to announce Donna Huanca's solo exhibition, HAYUMARCA OJOS, at the Goodman Gallery in Johannesburg. Pulling overarching thematic threads across the exhibition, this latest body of work closely considers the body, the earth and Andean heritage using gestural brushstrokes and colour palettes informed by ongoing engagement with the earth’s DNA; its minerals, gems, meteorites and plants. The result is a complex world of interconnected elements that reflect on fragmented identity and the obscuring of narratives. The exhibition opens on January 28 and will run until March 4, 2023.

The body and skin are ongoing points of focus in Donna Huanca’s (b. 1980 in Chicago, US) work, where she employs them as both surface and material. Her immersive artworks source from deep in our planet, echoing the geology of earth and employing palettes drawn from the natural world. Structurally layered and dense, they embody an allegory of the fragmentation of our identities.
